“Some people want it to happen. Some wish it would happen. Others make it happen”
                                                                             -Michael Jordan

Richard Hughes is one of the biggest names in flat racing’s history. He has been Champion flat jockey for the past 3 years, having first won the Jockeys’ Championship in 2012.

He finished runner-up in 2008, 2009, 2010 and has always been in the top six since 2004. He won the Flat Jockeys title again this year. Impressively, Richard Hughes has also won races over jumps, including the 1997 Irish Champion Hurdle on Cockney Lad.

Last year, the 41 year old finally broke his British Classic duck by riding Sky Lantern to victory in the 1,000 Guineas. He then won on Talent in the Investec Oaks, again on Sky Lantern at the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and steered Toronado to victory in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes. As a result he signed off as Jockey of the Series with a 15 point winning margin.

He also notched up another landmark by riding his first Breeders’ Cup winner on Chriselliam at Santa Anita in America. At this year’s Royal Ascot, Richard won two of the Group 1s on day one, the Queen Anne Stakes on Toronado, the King’s Stand Stakes on Sole Power and then finished runner-up on Night Of Thunder in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

Richard comes from a successful racing family. His father, Dessie Hughes, is a successful jumps trainer in Ireland, while his father-in-law is retired flat trainer Richard Hannon. Hughes was also retained by the owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.

Being current Champion, and one of the best flat jockeys of all time, Richard is popular at events. His Q&As are lively and he is the very best in his sport. He also writes a regular column in the Racing Post.
